This is how to create a notepad format shortcut file of a host file entry to desktop. The advantage of these shortcut is easy access to the file and easy to modify in case a new host file entry is added. Plus a notepad shortcut looks presentable than a host file that was not adopted to the environment of a certain file type.
First is to create a shortcut file from desktop. Right click—>new—->shortcut
Then after that you need to browse the location of the host file. For XP it should be…
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Then when you arrive to the location type “notepad” before the letter C: of the address above.Like this
“notepad” C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts.
Just make sure to add from browsing and don’t forget to have a space in between the notepad and C. Then Press Ok. Finally the file name must be Hosts. Congats!you made it.
